Music Marketing Blog Post #1

After receiving country as our music genre, Madi, Clara, and I looked into the meaning of country music, its important facts, and distribution and marketing trends that were particular to the genre. We chose Warner Records Nashville and Universal Music Group Nashville for our production companies. After picking our two production companies, I did the case studies on Chris Stapleton and Luke Bryan for the Universal Music Group. For Warner Records Nashville, Madi did a case study on Zach Bryan and Clara did Blake Shelton.

After that, we moved to a more challenging part of the project: creating the brand and marketing campaign. We knew our song, Need You Now, was about heartbreak after hearing it, so we incorporated that into the image of our singer, Kacey Smith. I was mostly responsible for creating the brand and decided that her music would be targeted at helping women in their 25s to 40s deal with the complexities of relationships and life.

Example from our Google Doc brainstorming sheet.

Clara primarily came up with the marketing campaign including the website, social media accounts, and pre-launch details. Below are examples of our marketing strategies taken from our brainstorming sheet.

For the music video, me and Madi storyboarded it prior, making the process of filming the video easier and more seamless. The music video was about Madi and I not being friends anymore to emphasize the meaning behind Kacey’s brand. We realized that more clips needed to be added and changes had to be made, as the filming process went on. We left the editing of the project to Madi.

The next step in our project is the presentation which will be a collaborative effort, to make it faster and easier to complete, and we all will obviously participate in the voiceover. I will input the information and Clara and Madi will design it to make it look intriguing.

Overall, splitting up the project was difficult, and we wanted to make sure that everybody was able to put in the same amount of effort.
